The house with a clock on its walls HORROR MASTER ELI ROTH SAYS SPIELBERG INSPIRED HIM TO MAKE THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS
when one thinks of Eli Roth, one remembers such blood-soaked and bloody gorefests as Hostel, Cabin Fever and The Green Inferno, not a PG-rated movie about a 10-year-old boy embarking on a magical adventure with a witch and a sorcerer
But that’s exactly what his new movie, The House with a Clock on the Walls, is about. Based on a 1973 children’s book by John Bellairs, the film stars Jack Black as the sorcerer and Cate Blanchett as the witch who fights demons and other terrifying creatures in her small town, with the help of a young orphan (Owen Vaccaro) .
The film is a production of Steven Spielberg’s legendary Amblin Entertainment, and Roth told Vulture that Spielberg himself was adamant about recapturing the vibe that classic Amblin films like Gremlins and The Goonies were fighting for:
“They really wanted to relaunch what Amblin was in the ’80s. Steven could not have supported me anymore, and when he saw the movie, he said,’ Eli, you really did it, you really made a real Amblin movie. Something previous, however, feels like it’s in the tradition of those, you really carry the torch. ” It was quite magical. “
And in case anyone thinks Roth has lost his advantage, he reveals that it was Spielberg who encouraged him to add a touch of darkness to the film:
“Well, you know, Steven told me, ‘Make it scare you.’ He said, ‘Kids want to be scared, you should scare them.’ Sebastian’s lab at Blade Runner was a big influence on this.” Terry Gilliam’s Brazil The dream of the clown in the great adventure of Pee-Wee There are shadows of that … When you make a horror movie, you’re really trying to annoy someone When it’s scary, magical and fun, it’s like a haunted house, where it’s scary and scary, but it’s not going to traumatize you, in fact, it makes kids very excited. ”
Roth says that making a movie like The house with a clock on its walls is a “natural progression” for him, “just made in the PG version”. And although he insists that he does not abandon the extreme horror that placed him first on the map, he is also clear that he wants to expand his horizons:
“This is the seventh film I’ve directed, I was ready for a bigger canvas, something more visually spectacular, the film is similar to my reputation, I know there’s a bit of danger from, Oh, my God, I can.” “I think I’ll take my kids to an Eli Roth movie, and I certainly want that to happen, that’s part of the fun, the fun is to surprise people.”
Is the world ready for a children’s fantasy movie directed by the guy whose name is almost synonymous with the infamous subgenre of terror known as “pornographic torture”? We will know in a few weeks when the house with a clock on the walls opens on September 21.
Eli Roth is not anyone’s idea of a family filmmaker, and yet the director of Cabin Fever has a new PG-rated adventure soon in theaters. The house with a clock on its walls is Roth’s first unrated film, adapted from the children’s book of the same name. So, how did the guy who made Hostel end up making a family movie? In a new interview, Roth says the progression was natural, and that Clock in Its Walls goes back to the old school films of Amblin.
When Eli Roth was at the height of his popularity, I do not think anyone could have predicted that he would make a PG family movie. And yet, here we are, with The House With a Clock in Its Walls coming to theaters next month. Roth sat down with Vulture to explain how this strange development happened. “In my opinion, it’s a natural progression,” said the filmmaker. “When you see the movie, you’ll see things from my other movies, just made in the PG version, in a very subversive way.”
Based on John Bellairs’ book, The House with a Clock on the Walls follows Lewis, 10, who “is going to live with his uncle in an old, crusty house containing a mysterious ticking noise.” When Lewis wakes up accidentally to the dead, the sleepy facade of the city magically comes alive with a secret world of witches and sorcerers. “I will confess that I am not a fan of Eli Roth. But the trailers of this movie look great, loaded with a wonderful atmosphere inspired by Halloween that I find hard to resist. This is Eli Roth’s first film that I’m really excited to see, and I want to say sometime. Throughout the history of his career, his first PG rated movie is the one that finally caught my attention.
Roth tells Vulture that he always “wanted” to make his version of the children’s movie, something similar
The house with a clock on its walls is Eli Roth’s next big-screen adaptation of the gothic horror children’s book written by John Bellairs. The film is only a few weeks away from its release in theaters and Universal Pictures has released a new poster featuring the stars Jack Black, Cate Blanchett and Owen Vaccaro. While the novel and subsequent books in the series are labeled as child terror, the new movie is touted as a fantasy movie, albeit a very dark version, as seen in the trailers.
The house with a clock on its walls is Eli Roth’s first experience working on a children’s movie and has stated that he wanted to incorporate some of the magic of the 80s into the film. Quote The Gremlins, E.T. and Back to the Future as some of the influences that touched the project.
In addition to being his first children’s film, The House with a Clock on its Walls takes place in 1955, which means that it is also Eli Roth’s first period piece.
Eli Roth loves horror movies for children and likes to call The House with a clock on its walls an “entrance horror movie”. The director hopes to influence children to enter the horror genre with his latest project and expects his adult fans to show the film to their children.
The director also recently noted that there are no horror films for real children at this time, which is one of the main decisions that attracted him to the project. With luck, children have the reaction that Roth is trying to get from them when the movie hits theaters.
Co-produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment, The House with a Clock on the Wall tells the story of ten-year-old Lewis Barnavelt (Owen Vaccaro), who travels to New Zebedee, Michigan to live with his uncle Jonathan Barnavelt (Jack Black) in an old crusty house that has a mysterious ticking heart. Lewis begins to learn that there is much more in the house than he originally thought and that his uncle Jonathan is a well-meaning witch, while the neighbor Florence Zimmerman (Cate Blanchett) is a powerful witch. Zimmerman and Barnavelt can be seen in the promotional material taking funny to each other, while Lewis discovers the mysteries of the house.
The house with a clock on its walls opens in theaters on September 21, which is the perfect time to launch a horror movie for children of fantasy. In addition to Cate Blanchett, Jack Black and Owen Vaccaro, the film stars Kyle MacLachlan as Isaac Izard, a sorcerer who is Selena’s husband and the sinister original owner of the house. Renee Elise Goldsberry plays Selena Izard, Isaac’s wife, while Sunny Suljic plays Tarby Corrigan, Lewis’s classmate. Colleen Camp plays Mrs. Hanchett, an intrusive and irritated neighbor of Jonathan Barnavelt, Lorenza Izzo plays Mrs. Barnavelt, Lewis’s mother, and Vanessa Anne Williams plays Rose Rita Pottinger.
